Tues. Sept. 1 (1st Day): Discuss routine and expectations of Reading Workshop in our room. Once they are on the back carpet, I am going to ask them to discuss anything they want about reading or a book they read. After discussing the purpose of a reading inventory, I will send them back to their seats to fill out the inventory, keeping those without a book to stay with me to pick out a book.
Wed. Sept. 2 ,Thurs. 9/3, Fri. 9/4 : Envisioning. Mini lessons can be taken from a short piece of a read aloud or picture book. Model and discuss how readers make pictures in their minds as they read. Students should talk with a partner about what they see as the room, what the character looks like or is doing. While these conversations go on, listen as to their thinking. This could give us a good idea to reading pairs.
Week 1: ML 1- We need to be engaged as readers. T-T books/characters they loved. Then adminster DRA2 interest survey. (I'm using Diane's int survey as a follow-up for those who are disengaged and need more help finding a book...)ML 2: Guidelines for RW & 30 min reading & observe. ML 3: Books I want to read & 30 min. & confer. ML 4: Learning Preference Survey/30 min and confer. T&T with partners in Read Aloud. Try to get kids in JRB's or almost JRB's. (Very similar to yours Diane...)- S.
